Cookbook Review: Heston Blumenthal at Home

My rating: 4 1/2 stars

Molecular gastronomy for idiots. Unleash your inner gadget whore!

Heston Potato2

Highlights:

  • Makes a home cooked meal taste better.
  • Lots of online demos and advice from Heston himself

Lowlights:

  • Makes a home cooked meal take three times longer to prepare.
  • Lots of proof reading errors (hence the need to rely on the online demos)

But how does this book cook? READ MORE AFTER THE JUMP read more »

Cookbook Review: Jamie’s Great Britain by Jamie Oliver

My rating: 3 ½  stars

(3 for taste, 4 for trying)

An epic tome dedicated to that oxymoron –  “British Cuisine”

Jamie’s done a tremendous job of compiling Great Britain’s signature dishes into one giant book. The problem is, the food tastes pretty crap. read more »

Cookbook Review: Our Family Table by Julie Goodwin

My rating 4 stars

Our Family Table = Julie Goodwin = Solid, Simple, Reliable, Strong. Buy this book to give as someone’s “first cookbook” or as a leaving home gift. This book is idiot-proof.

Julie Goodwin was the first winner of Australia’s Masterchef 2009.

With “Our Family Table” Julie gives us a book that every Aussie household needs. This is not a dazzling culinary journey designed to transport your palate to a new universe. Rather, this is warm comfort food that’s easy to make. There’s no need for any special trips to the supermarket. In fact nearly all the ingredients will be in your pantry or could be sourced at a larger 7/11 (note her spag bol suspiciously contains no herbs). read more »

Cookbook Review: 2010 Cookbook of the Year: Around My French Table

My rating 4 1/2 stars

This book is old school i.e. it’s similar to books from the 60’s and 70’s in that there are hardly any pictures and there’s an overdose of words. (bye bye Gen Y, LOL, LMAO).  I would have cooked more than one recipe but typing out one gave me carpel tunnel.

Cookbook Review: Clarissa’s Comfort Food by Clarissa Dickson-Wright

My rating: 3 1/2 stars

In my quest for “Great British Food” (a fool’s quest to some and an oxymoron to many) I stumbled upon “Clarissa’s Comfort Food” in a discount bookshop. read more »

Cookbook Review: Two Asian Kitchens by Adam Liaw

My rating: 5 stars

Two Asian Kitchens
Adam Liaw is the thinking woman’s crumpet – warm, airy and a bit stodgy in the middle. There are no less than 8 pork belly recipes in this book!! read more »

Cookbook Review: Making Whoopies: The Official Whoopie Pie Book

My rating: 2 1/2 stars for the book 4 stars for the actual pie!

I’ve heard lots of noise about Whoopie pies. Hey they were even on The View and have been billed as the next big thing since cupcakes by the NY Times. So what are these “pies”? Well, they aren’t the tarts that Americans traditionally label as “pies”. Rather they are muffin tops sandwiched together by some kind of nuclear white cream.

Cookbook Review: Food Safari by Maeve O’Meara

By Cookie McBookie

My rating: 4 stars

Food Safari is a “culinary adventure around the world” that you can do from your kitchen in Australia. Its a great idea and Maeve O’Meara has assembled a big collection of recipes from professional chefs and home cooks.

However, styling-wise the book looks like a tribal painting threw up on a persian carpet.

Cookbook Review: The Country Women’s Association Cookbook Seventy Years in the Kitchen

by Cookie McBookie

My rating: 1/2  star

Take note – there is NO Vanilla Slice recipe. WTF!  On the savoury front – NO Shepherd’s Pie!! This book is not the jedi-path to being dinki-di. Also, in contrast to similar publications, there are no boasts of blue ribbon, prize winning recipes that I was hoping to try. read more »
